Subject: Fall Music Festival Nov. 15

Fall Music Festival Presented by the Chinese Association of Greater Toledo and the Association of Chinese Faculty and Staff at UT

The Chinese Association of Greater Toledo (CAGT) and thee Association of Chinese Faculty and Staff (ACFS) at the University of Toledo will present a culturally rich entertainment program at the University of Toledo, Doermann Theatre, November 15, 2009 from 3:00 to 5:30 pm.

As part of a collaborative effort of the two organizations, CAGT and ACFS will present this enjoyable and diverse cultural program to showcase the beauty of China, a fascinating country with over 5000 years of history and 1.3 billion people. It is their goal to encourage members of our community to increase their awareness of the rich, cultural presence of our Chinese friends and neighbors in Toledo.

The program will consist of a varied array of performances by more than one hundred children and adults. The performances will include lion dance, choir, Thai Chi, Chinese folk music, piano, dance, Peking Opera, fashion show, and much more. Guests may also partake in a special complimentary tea tasting as they enter the theatre, beginning at 2:30 PM.

There are several thousand Chinese in the Greater Toledo area, involved in education, research, business, or simply visiting. One of the greatest challenges for this group of people is not only to adapt to the new cultural environment, but also to add the value of its heritage to the local community. With accelerating economic development in China, we anticipate a fast growing number of Chinese in the region and an increase in exchanges of education, business, as well as cultural and social programs.

Anyone who is interested in Chinese Culture and fine musical entertainment is encouraged to attend this culturally rich event. Admission is free and is open to the public.

Subject: UT policy committee begins third year of work

The UT policy committee is an all-campus Presidential committee that is beginning its third year of work. The committee is charged with merging policies between the Main Campus and the Health Science Campus. The committee also encourages the updating of policies. The committee is not charged with deciding the appropriateness or validity of policies.

The committee has established a comprehensive policy website at www.utoledo.edu/policies to ensure that faculty, staff, and students have ready access to the policies. It is the responsibility of the UT community, including faculty, staff, and students, to comply with the University policies that affect them.

All new policies, merged policies, and revised policies are in a common format with a responsible agent and posted on the web for a 30 day comment period. Comments that are submitted are reviewed and answered by the responsible agent. Policy updates are automatically emailed to any stakeholder who joins the email notification of updates by sending an email to policies@utoledo.edu.

Subject: JHCOE Research Colloquium Series Monday, Nov 9

Joan N. Kaderavek, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Distinguished University Professor, Early Childhood, Physical, and Special Education, Judith Herb College of Education, will present Results of a Print Referencing Preschool Book Reading Intervention: Children At-Risk for Reading Failure at the Judith Herb College of Education Research Colloquium Series, Monday, November 9, 2009, 12:00pm - 1:00pm, 3100C Gillham Hall.

Sit Together and Read (STAR) (Project 1): Using a randomized controlled trial design, this four-year research project is being completed at the University of Toledo in conjunction with the Ohio State University. STAR 1 investigates the efficacy of a specific early reading intervention, called print referencing, in a group of at-risk children. Print referencing involves teachers systematically and explicitly focusing on early print-related skills during shared storybook reading. The goals of this study are to investigate the impact of the intervention on children's reading outcomes and reading trajectories through kindergarten, evaluate the importance of intervention dosage to children's outcomes, and to investigate moderating influences (e.g., family literacy environment, parent book reading, children's language abilities, teacher quality, intervention fidelity) on children's outcomes. Over 40 early childhood teachers in Northwest Ohio participated. This presentation will describe outcomes of the study and also discuss the challenges associated with conducting a large-scale, multiple site, experimental study.

The JHCOE Research Colloquium Series, sponsored by the Judith Herb College of Education, is an opportunity to present, discuss, and share ongoing or completed research. The colloquium meets noon to 1 pm in the Dean's conference room 3100C in Gillham Hall alternate Monday?s and Tuesday's alternate weeks during the academic year for intellectual dialogue and discussion of ideas and is open to all who are interested. Faculty, graduate students, and guests are all encouraged to present as well as to attend. Please, bring your brown bag lunch.

Subject: UT/OSU/UM Diabetes Update: The Big Game

UT/OSU/UM Diabetes Update: The Big Game to be held on November 20, 2009 from 9am-4:30pm at the Eleanor N. Dana Conference Center.

Obesity and diabetes have contributed significantly to our nation's current financial crisis. Treatment of patients with diabetes now accounts for close to one-fourth of all health-care expenses in the United States. To move quickly toward prevention of diabetes and more efficient care of diabetic patients, clinicians and scientists must engage in intense dialogue and provide rapid translation of basic research to standards of patient care in the community.

In this context, the 2009 symposium will cover pathogenesis and treatment of a wide spectrum of diabetes-related disease. Topics covered will include control of metabolism and body mass by central nervous system, strategies for prevention and reversal of obesity, ethnic contributions to Type 2 diabetes, autoantigens in Type 1 diabetes, on set of Type 1 diabetes in adults, and latest research and recommendations as regards risks and benefits of inpatient glucose control.

To keep these presentations timely and efficient, we have recruited a group of internationally recognized clinicians and scientists from The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan to meet and collaborate with their colleagues at a neutral site - The University of Toledo Health Science Campus. All clinicians and allied personnel with an interest in care of diabetic patients and obesity should plan to attend.

Subject: UT/OSU/UM Diabetes Update: The Big Game

Obesity and diabetes have contributed significantly to our nation's current financial crisis. Treatment of patients with diabetes now accounts for close to one-fourth of all health-care expenses in the United States. To move quickly toward prevention of diabetes and more efficient care of diabetic patients, clinicians and scientists must engage in intense dialogue and provide rapid translation of basic research to standards of patient care in the community.

In this context, the "UT/OSU/UM Diabetes Update: The Big Game" Symposium will cover pathogenesis and treatment of a wide spectrum of diabetes-related disease. Topics covered will include control of metabolism and body mass by central nervous system, strategies for prevention and reversal of obesity, ethnic contributions to Type 2 diabetes, autoantigens in Type 1 diabetes, onset of Type 1 diabetes in adults, and latest research and recommendations as regards risks and benefits of inpatient glucose control.

More information can be found at http://cme.utoledo.edu under "upcoming events."

Subject: Faculty Exhibit: "Transitions & Journeys"

"Transitions and Journeys" is a two-person exhibition of artwork created by UT Art Department Faculty members Arturo Rodriguez and Deborah Orloff while they were on sabbatical during the 2008-2009 school year. It will run October 11 through November 22. An opening reception will be held Friday, October 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the UT Center for the Visual Arts.

Orloff is a professor of art and teaches and coordinates photography in the new media area. Rodriguez is an associate professor of art in printmaking and director of the printmaking area.

For this exhibition, the artists utilize the CVA Gallery and extend the show into the public space of the first floor. The gallery will be transformed into a dramatic darkened space to create a unique visual experience in which the works themselves provide the only light in the gallery.
